The AP Spanish Literature and Culture course covers an overview of Hispanic literature from the medieval period through the 21st century. Both Peninsular and Latin American authors are represented in the genres of poetry, drama, short stories and novels. Students also learn to read, understand and discuss literary analysis and criticism through the writings and commentaries of experts in the field. This course will be taught entirely in Spanish. Students will read and discuss each of the works included on the required AP Spanish Literature reading list. We use the text Azulejo: Anthology and Guide to the AP Spanish Literature Course. (Wayside Publishing, 2012) as the primary text, with additional resources drawn from Abriendo Puertas: Ampliando Perspectivas (McDougal Littell/Nexttext, 2013).
In this course, students will learn to develop a high degree of competence in language skills and in the interpretation of literature. Students are required to read, analyze and discuss in writing a wide variety of representative works from three major genres: narrative, poetry, and theater, using the appropriate terminology and applying the different tools of literary criticism. The objective of this course is to help students foster an appreciation of the Spanish Language and of Hispanic literature and culture and to teach students the techniques of literary analysis.
The course will be taught exclusively in Spanish in class and students are encouraged to also use Spanish exclusively in class and out of class.
Course resources:
Colbert, Maria, Abby Kanter, James Ryan, and Marian Sugano. Azulejo: Anthology and Guide to the AP Spanish Literature Course. 2nd ed. Sandwich, MA: Wayside Pub., 2012. Print.
