Semester Projects 2015-2016
Español I/II/III/IV

First is due in December second is due in May. You must choose a new project each semester! No repeats! Pre-approval required for all projects!
- Eat at an authentic Hispanic restaurant. (This does not include any of the American chains, like Taco Bell, Taco John’s, etc.) Bring in photos of yourself eating the food in the restaurant. Write a detailed description (not just the names) of the food you and the rest of your group ate. Tell whether you were able to speak, hear, or read Spanish in the restaurant. If so, what words or phrases did you use? If not, why not? Also describe the atmosphere of the restaurant and your overall impressions of your experience. How was the restaurant decorated? Was there background music? Description must be at least one page, typed and double-spaced.
- Make a collection of Spanish used in things you find around the house. Look on labels, packages, instruction books, forms, and junk mail. Creatively and neatly display the entire label on a poster or in a booklet. A minimum of 20 different items is required. Near each label write where the label came from (i.e., T-shirt washing instructions). Circle or highlight at least one new word in Spanish from each label and give the English translation. *Be careful—French is not Spanish.
- Learn a new song in Spanish, a piece of traditional music for instruments, or a traditional dance. Arrange to perform this for the class, or videotape your performance. This may be done solo or in a group of up to four. Be able to tell me the name of the song and the composer and where the song originated. Report must be at least one page, typed and double-spaced.
- Attend a festival, program, church service or cultural event related to Hispanic Culture. Bring in the program. Write a summary of the event and what you learned from it. Summary must be at least one page, typed and double-spaced.
- Arrange to practice Spanish with one of our native speaking students or any other native speaker. This time should total at least an hour, but may be done in small segments. Keep a diary that gives the dates and topics discussed. Have the native speaker sign the diary. This may be done with a partner. This is not for doing homework; it is for speaking and conversation. The diary must be at least one page, typed and double-spaced.
- Read a book in English with a Hispanic theme. One example is Cuba 15, a story about a young Cuban American girl who is about to celebrate her 15th birthday. Others are Esperanza Rising, Cajas de Carton, House on Mango Street, House of the Spirits, Like Water for Chocolate, The Death of Artemio Cruz, 100 Years of Solitude, etc. Have the book approved by me in writing in advance. Type a summary of the plot of the book. Describe specifically what you learned about Hispanic people and culture. Description must be at least one page, typed and double-spaced.
- Travel related projects: If you have the chance to travel to a Spanish speaking country, or to a Spanish speaking part of the United States, choose a particular topic to study or observe while you are there. For example, you might want to study food, or stores, or traditional crafts. Have your project approved by me in advance. Take photos while you are there and then put together a photo album or Power Point to share what you learned.
- Music: Select a CD of music in Spanish. Listen to the entire CD. Find information to share with the class about the musicians and the kind of music they play. Type a summary (in your own words) of what you read. Choose one song to study in detail. Find the Spanish lyrics and their English translation. (They may have a website. Cite your source.) Notify me in advance of when you plan to present your project so I can have a CD player and document camera available for you to play the song and share the lyrics with the class. Report must be at least one page long, typed and double-spaced.
- Art: Make a traditional art or craft from a Hispanic country. Two examples might be Mexican paper cutting or Central American mola designs. Turn in the art project as well as a typed explanation of the art or craft you chose, including where it is from and how it is done. Report must be at least one page, typed and double-spaced.
